Casework at Sakeenah involves assessing, planning, coordinating, and monitoring services to meet the unique needs of clients. This includes intake, goal setting, case planning, advocacy, referrals, crisis intervention, safety planning, financial assistance, and support with government benefits, subsidized housing, family law, mental health, immigration documents, and budget planning for both in-home and remote clients.
Clients can contact Sakeenah via phone, email, or social media. Our Admin team gathers the client's details and service needs, then refers them to the Casework team for case management.
A caseworker contacts the client within 24-48 hours to schedule an intake appointment. Once the intake form is completed and required documents are received, services begin.
Sakeenah operates transitional homes, not emergency shelters or walk-in shelters. Women and children move into our homes after assessments are completed, and space is available, typically within 24-48 hours. We are open Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but also have an after-hours emergency program where we accept calls past 5:00 PM on weekdays and provide 24-hour support on weekends for anyone in need of emergency assistance.
Sakeenah is primarily a Muslim women and childrens shelter, however Sakeenah helps and supports clients from all backgrounds as long as the clients respect and follow Sakeenah’s in-home rules and guidelines.
The length of stay at Sakeenah Transitional Homes varies depending on the client’s goals and circumstances.
Children and youth are referred to Sakeenah’s Child and Youth program, which also offers guidance and resources to help mothers support their children during their stay and beyond.
No, The People’s Market is a monthly food assistance program available by referral and appointment only. Caseworkers schedule appointments based on the client’s preferred day and time.
While Sakeenah functions at a national level, our head office and The People’s Market operate out of land that is part of the Treaty and Traditional Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, The Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Huron-Wendat and Wyandot Nations.
Sakeenah believes that while a land acknowledgement is the first step, we also understand that land acknowledgements alone are not sufficient to redress the harm caused by centuries of land theft, forced displacement and ongoing acts of settler colonialism. We recognize that this work is ongoing and complex, and we are dedicated to doing our part to create a better future for all.
