Getting Ahead Of The School Scaries
Wake me up when September ends, right? We won’t sugar coat it, the start of a new school year can be nerve wracking, whether you’re entering a new grade in primary/secondary school or a new year in your undergraduate or postgraduate journey.
Most of us think of September as the end of happiness (or at least I do). We feel like we’re forced to leave behind the freedom and fun of summer break, for colder weather and a strict schedule of heavy learning. The change can be very anxiety inducing, and frankly overwhelming, but approaching it with positive intentions before it begins can help set up your success for the school year.
Here are 5 tips to get ahead of the school scaries, and make it through the next school year with confidence and sukoon:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever takes a path upon which to obtain knowledge, Allah makes the path to Paradise easy for him.”
— Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2646
Take a moment to remember the important value placed on knowledge in Islam - so much so that its virtues are endless in this world, and the next.
Think of what you’re learning and how you plan on impacting the world and/or the people around you with it. Dream big - Islam says to avoid pursuing knowledge with the goal of acquiring wealth or status, let’s think beyond that!
Write down your intention of serving and pleasing Allah through your specific ambitions. How will your learning bring you closer to Allah?
Remind yourself that you are not alone in your learning, you have others around you, and they can catapult greater success for you! ‘Rabbi Zidni Ilma’ “My Lord, increase me in knowledge.” [Quran 20:114]
Try to intentionally incorporate dialogue and/or collaboration with your peers - whether it be through projects, study sessions, or by taking a quick break from work together. You’ll be surprised by how much you can learn from each other. You may even notice you feel happier, motivated and even inspired by being around others too!
Lean on experts when the stress and anxiety seems out of your control. Take a deep breath and ask for help before it gets worse. Many schools have readily available guidance counselors to help make your school experience tailored for you. Talk to them about what is/isn’t working for you and find a solution together. Remember, you also have a community to help you when you’re struggling. You can ask elders who were in your shoes in the past for advice, or even get a mentor that relates to you!
Now say Bismillah as you head into this new school year with confidence! Most importantly, know that Sakeenah is always there rooting for you.
